Capturing the Essence Through Visual Storytelling

Collaborating with Creatives to Craft Memorable Posters

I’ve had the privilege of designing posters for both large-scale productions and grassroots organizations, with a particular fondness for community theater. Whether for a New York stage or a local playhouse, my goal is to create visually compelling imagery that captures the essence of each piece. The challenge lies in translating a director’s vision, the script’s themes, and the production’s overall tone into a single, memorable image that resonates with audiences and promotes the event effectively.

The Approach

My process begins with an in-depth understanding of the material. I immerse myself in the script and engage in lengthy conversations with directors, writers, and other creatives to truly understand their vision. When possible, I attend rehearsals or script reads to get a feel for the atmosphere and key moments in the production. From there, I pitch several concepts and themes before moving on to detailed sketches. Once a direction is chosen, I iterate on the design through multiple drafts, refining it with feedback until the final product is ready.

The Result

While the success of a poster can be less quantifiable than other deliverables, a strong result is when the imagery leaves a lasting impression. People should remember the play’s title or the film based on the visuals, and they should know where and when the event is taking place. My work has helped productions garner attention, increase attendance, and create a visual identity that reflects the heart of the story.
